June 5th 2018 is World Environment Day and the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) has announced that this year’s theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution”[i]. WABA invites us to work together to reduce the use of plastic in our lives. Plastic constitutes one of the biggest environmental challenges today and it pollutes our environment, wildlife and our own health. Plastic feeding bottles and teats take a long time to degrade after disposal.
Breastfeeding is one of the best ways to protect both our planet’s ecosystems and our health. It helps to ensure food security, has a positive effect on maternal and child health and wellbeing, and is vastly important to our carbon footprint.
